Grant Dalton, Team New Zealand general manager, has spoken to Radio New Zealand about the upcoming match racing event, giving some initial details. Five teams have already teams that showed their interest in taking part. They were BMW Oracle, K-Challenge (the first to publicly express their interest), Shosholoza, Desafío Español and Team Origin.
The regatta will pitch teams against each other in Team NZ boats, match racing style, which will limit the technological race and reduce opportunities for sponsors, however it does help to position the event as ‘not’ the Americas Cup.
Dalton was, optimistic about the prospects of the event, funded by Louis Vuitton and the New Zealand government, the latter to the tune of NZ 750,000 dollars. The city of Auckland is also providing support in kind to promote the area for tourism, a rising trend in sailing.
