Beneteau, one of the world’s largest yacht builders is backing the Vendee Globe with a fleet of power boats. We’re still waiting for a manufacturer to support yacht racing with their own sailing team, but perhaps this is an admission that association with yacht racing does sell more boats.
The company sees the support as “only natural”. The boats will be provided for the use of the press and organising officials at the start and finish of every race.
15 Antarès 9.80s, each powered by two 225hp Volvo D4 engines and crewed by experienced BENETEAU skippers and mates, will carry TV and radio crews from around the world as they broadcast live from the water. The Antarès 9.80s will carry some 90 international journalists and photographers.
The same level of support will be provided for the finish of the race.
