While pro-sports in American struggle with whether or not to allow alcohol sponsorships, one of sailing’s Who’s Who of sponsors, Mount Gay Rum, is looking to activate with a mix of promotions and competitions during the upcoming Cowes Week.
Mount Gay has always been closely linked to the world of sailing; from 17th century navigation when in order to prove passage across the Atlantic from Europe to the ‘New World’, sailors were obliged to bring back a barrel of Barbados rum to add weight to their words, to present day regattas and competitors wearing Mount Gay Red Caps with pride.
Gemma Adams, Brand Manager for Mount Gay, commented:
“Cowes Week is the world’s oldest regatta so it is the ideal platform for us to promote Mount Gay, the world’s oldest rum… We hope supporting Cowes Week will only further propel its status and popularity.”
The brand will activate at the Isle of Wight based regatta with competitors and visitors alike being able to sample Mount Gay Rum, at all the key “watering holes” in and around Cowes. Special tastings of Mount Gay Extra Old Rum served with truffles created by local chocolatier Chocs Away, will be sampled at a selection of dinners, cocktail parties and balls throughout the week.
Mount Gay will also back Cowes Radio by running a Mount Gay Crew of the Day Competition and treasure hunt for a fictional rum barrel.
To help entice even more people to enjoy what’s on offer at Cowes Week this year, Mount Gay is also running national, specialist press and online competitions to bring winners down for some racing on board a fully crewed Farr 65.
The ‘famous’ Red Cap Party wll be held at Shepards Wharf on Thursday, 6 August.
