The business of Yacht Racing is more than just sponsorship. The logistics of running professional sporting events are complicated and as the bickering in the America’s Cup shows, having expert race officials is key to running a top level events.
The industry that is slowly being built up around yacht racing at the elite level provides opportunities for specialist companies to deliver professional services to replace yacht club volunteers and provide consistency and quality.
One of the companies that is seizing this opportunity is GWM Racing. GWM Racing was formed by John Grandy and Peter Wykeham-Martin after working together on the successful 2007 Dubois Cup held in Palma, Majorca.
This weekend the company announced that Oyster Marine have signed a three year agreement appointing GWM Racing Ltd to manage all aspects of the race management for the Oyster Regatta programme in the Caribbean and Mediterranean from January 2010.
CEO, David Tydeman said:
“We are delighted to have secured the services of GWM Racing, who we are confident will bring a new level of professionalism to our events, whilst maintaining the friendly camaraderie on and off the water, for which Oyster regattas are renowned. John and Peter will work closely with our existing in-house team, who will continue to manage and run the events, which are so popular with Oyster owners worldwide.”
John Grandy and Peter Wykeham-Martin said:
“We are delighted to have been appointed by Oyster Marine. We look forward to working with the Oyster team and continuing to develop the traditional style of Oyster racing, a proven formula much enjoyed by the owners of these prestigious yachts”.
GWM Racing has also provided their services to the Superyacht Cup for their 2008 Palma Regatta, and subsequently by Antigua Sailing Week for their 2009 Regatta. In July 2009 GWM were appointed to advise the Ministry of Sports in Oman for the forthcoming Muscat to Khasab Race, which takes place in November 2009.
