The Velux 5 Oceans Race began on Sunday, with 5 skippers starting from La Rochelle in Eco60 boats for a race around the world. Competing for the biggest PR sell of the year, the start was described hopefully as: “one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the year.” The phrase was repeated by the ‘cut and paste’ sailing websites without any question.

The path to being an expert can be easy or hard. ” price=”0.99″]On the one hand, having only 5 boats on the start line is not going to look that impressive, but it means the sponsors of those boats are not going to get lost in the noise.
Joining the Velux 5 Oceans Race as an official partner is Nautica Watches. The watch brand will be the official timekeeper of the round the world race. Nautica Watches will provide the official countdown to the start of each of the five ocean sprints. Each of the VELUX 5 OCEANS racers and race VIPs will also be presented with a Nautica NST Yachtimer chronograph watch featuring a race countdown timer and stopwatch.
Watches and sailing go hand in hand. Rolex, Omega, Hublot and Panerai all sponsor sailing. The watch was invented to determine longitude while at sea. There is a natural fit between the sailing demographic and watch makers, and with a name like Nautica – it’s easy to see why a sponsorship fits. Nevertheless, the PR reminds us:
“Being able to accurately tell the time is vital for the skippers while at sea. It’s essential that their timekeeping is accurate so they can maintain optimum performance. Their Eco 60 yachts can travel at speeds of up to 35mph and when sailing in the Southern Ocean time zones change frequently. Knowing the right time is also key to being able to plan for oncoming weather systems. Watches can also be used to determine a yacht’s position using navigation by the stars – crucial for skippers if electronic navigation systems fail.”
Linda Calvert, Nautica Watches Global Brand Director said:
“Nautica Watches is very proud to be the official watch supplier for the prestigious VELUX 5 OCEANS. This partnership reaffirms the heritage of the Nautica brand, and its close association with the sailing community since it was founded in 1983. We wish all of the courageous competitors the best of luck in this extraordinary event.”
Commenting on the partnership, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Chairman of Clipper Ventures and the VELUX 5 OCEANS, added:
“The skippers of the VELUX 5 OCEANS will sail through some of the most extreme conditions on the planets, and their watches need to withstand these harsh environments. As a leading watch brand with a global presence and world class products, Nautica Watches is ideally positioned to supply the skippers of The Ultimate Solo Challenge.”
