Extreme Sailing Series on Channel 4

7:30 AM seems to be the new sailing slot on UK terrestrial television. After showing a couple of short docos about the J P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, Channel 4 this week will start showing a round up of the 2010 Extreme Sailing Series.

The path to being an expert can be easy or hard. ” price=”0.99″]The series for Extreme 40 catamarans is due to announce its plans for the 2011 season before the World Yacht Racing Forum in Portugal in December. Organisers are expected to announce new venues around the world, not just in Europe as well as other innovations. Two time America’s Cup winners, Alinghi have announced that they will compete in 2011.

Channel 4 will show four, half-hour shows, presented by double Olympic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson and produced by Sunset+Vine|APP.

Even though races are short, conveying the narrative of an event that takes place over 4-5 days with 6 teams is a tough thing to do in 30 minutes. Nevertheless, mainstream sailing fans, starved of their sport on television will get to enjoy some great action sequences from on the boat and chasing.

And because all sports fans are really watching to see the ‘wreck’, the 2010 circuit had plenty of drama…

Franck Cammas, the first man to lead a crew and sail around the planet in less than fifty days was stopped in his tracks at the UK round in a crash that left him with no control. Heading towards a concrete wall at twenty knots he makes the call to abandon ship.

At the Italian round in Trapani wild winds hit the fleet which saw the premier sailors lose control as their bows head deep underwater, the crew suspended in mid air with no steerage.
