Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships Sign Up Tag Heuer and Jessica Watson

The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships have announced that TAG Heuer will be the Official Time Keeper for the event. Organisers have also signed up Jessica Watson as one of several ambassadors for the event.

Competition amongst watch-makers in the sport of sailing is fierce. Rolex invest heavily in sailing, as do Omega, Hublot and Panerai. The associations between precision, form and function sit well with professional sailing, and in Olympic classes, where fractions of seconds can mean the difference between Gold and Silver, those associations are increased.

Director of Commercial Operations for Perth 2011 Darren Beazley said of the sponsorship deal:

“In the arena of fast-paced Olympic sailing, accurate timing means everything…it may ultimately decide which nations qualify and are represented at the London 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Competition, and those who miss out on their Olympic dreams. TAG Heuer will bring a level of timing sophistication to this prestigious international sailing Event that is bold and innovative.”

Bruce Grinter, Brand Manager of TAG Heuer for Australian and New Zealand got the product plug into his statement:

“TAG Heuer is the world leader in prestige sports watches and chronographs. Having enjoyed such a rich heritage and association with competitive sports, it is no surprise that the partnership with Perth 2011 presents a perfect alignment for TAG Heuer. Inspired by the essence of sports, TAG Heuer continually pushes the boundaries of technical know-how and product development to launch such pieces as the Monaco V4, the first timepiece to use a belt-driven transmission, inspired by the engine belts in motorcars, and the new Aquaracer 500, a diving watch with a helium release valve that can handle the pressure of 500 metres water resistance,”

The World Championship event has also called upon Jessica Watson to promote the event to a younger audience and those who are unfamiliar with the sport, but have started to become interested after her round the world voyage. The teenage sailor hopes that her popularity will drive more people into the sport of sailing. She said:

“…It’s an honour to be an Ambassador for such a prestigious event, which I hope will encourage even more people to take up sailing.”

Watson will become one of several ambassadors from each state of Australia. The other ambassadors are all sailors and include John Bertrand, of America’s Cup fame, and the ‘Golden Girls’, Beijing 2008 Olympic Gold Medallists Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson.

Perth 2011 plans to sign on Ambassadors in each Australian state and international identities in the UK and USA. It will be fascinating to see how those choices are made and if they are also sailors or whether Perth 2011 can find other well known figures willing to back the event. If sailing can’t find Hollywood actors, singers or other celebrities who love sailing, then the sport has a problem.

Perth 2011 Announces Fairfax Digital as Local Media Partner.

Perth 2011 have teamed up with Fairfax Media to promote the Sailing World Championship to an Australian audience. Director of Commercial Operations Darren Beazley has announced that the event will partner with WAtoday.com.au, who will become a silver level sponsor and official online partner to the regatta.

Mr Beazley said:

“Two of our main aims at Perth 2011 are to increase awareness of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships and to raise the profile of the sport of sailing. The partnership with WAtoday.com.au will provide a significant boost to the Sailing World Championships with promotion of the Event and the sport, through local and national coverage via its sister sites – smh.com.au, theage.com.au and brisbanetimes.com.au – and through international readership opportunities.”

WAtoday.com.au Marketing Manager Nicola Brandon agreed that the collaboration was exciting saying:

“WAtoday.com.au is thrilled to come on board as the media partner for Perth 2011. This is a great event for sailing and for Perth. WAtoday.com.au delivers Western Australia with high quality breaking news and we look forward to sharing this Event with our visitors.”

The partnership should assist in driving traffic to the Perth 2011 website, however a quick search of the WAtoday.com.au website shows that the media outlet is a little light on sailing content, despite Perth being the home of some of Australia’s best sailors. While the portal reports on Belcher and Page winning the 470 World Championships last week, a search for Torvar Mirsky – who represents Western Australia in the World Match Racing Tour and is ranked 3rd in the world, returns zero search results.

Little Creatures Sponsor Perth 2011 To Get Global Reach.

Despite being held in the most remote city on the planet, the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will have global reach. A large proportion of the world’s sailing countries will make their final selections for the 2012 Olympic Games in London based on the results in Perth. The event then is an opportunity for Perth to be a platform for all kinds of brands who want to position themselves to a global audience whether they be competitors, officials or fans.

Despite the global event status, and large corporate backing of many of the teams competing, event organisers continue to announce relatively small, local sponsorship deals. The latest is Western Australian brewer Little Creatures, who will receive great benefits from their association.

Perth 2011 Director of Commercial Operations Darren Beazley said:

“Little Creatures produces Western Australia’s favourite beer at one of Fremantle’s favourite destinations, which makes them a natural fit as the Official Beer of the Sailing World Championships. Come December 2011, this Fremantle ‘institution’ will be located in the epicentre for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships. Little Creatures will have the chance to promote their quality beverages to an audience that will provide them with tremendous local, national and international exposure. Perth 2011 is delighted to have a partnership with a brewer that is ‘best of breed’, uniquely Western Australian and mirrors our youthful approach to promoting the World Championships.”

Little Creatures Head of Creative Development Miles Hull agreed that the marketing and promotional prospects are exciting and that Perth 2011 and the brewer had today formed a mutually beneficial partnership.

“Given our Brewery’s location in the heart of the World Championships, we are very excited that one of the biggest sailing events in Australian sporting history is coming to Fremantle. We trust that visitors, tourists and locals alike will enjoy our great beer, amongst the fantastic atmosphere that this world-class Event will bring to the Fremantle waterside.”

Perth 2011 is a great opportunity not just for Western Australia but Fremantle, in particular, and we’ll be highlighted on the national and international stage. Fremantle has such a terrific community and Little Creatures is very proud to be playing a major role in partnering with Perth 2011 to promote it to the world.”
