Match Cup Sweden Continues to Innovate for Fans and Partners

Posted by on Jul 14, 2011 in Alpari World Match Racing Tour, Business, Europe | Comments Off

We’re very uncool at yachtsponsorship.com. We love old fashioned match racing. Part of that appreciation was built through attending Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand, an event which is far from being old-fashioned. Despite being run in the same place in the same calendar slot for the last 17 years, the event continues to be one of the most innovative sailing events anywhere. While the America’s Cup has taken some time to climb aboard the ‘stadium sailing’ bandwagon, Match Cup Sweden could rightfully claim to be one of the...

DELL Sponsorship of Emirates Team NZ Leverages Partnerships.

Posted by on Jul 13, 2011 in Americas Cup, New Zealand | Comments Off

America’s Cup challenger Emirates Team New Zealand has announced a technology partnership with DELL. It’s a great illustration of how sponsorship doesn’t always have to be a sticker on the side of a hull to have value to both parties. Some sports marketing pros argue over the differences between a sponsorship and a partnership. Often the difference is just in the definition, but sometimes the sponsorship/partnership arrangement works on levels that are never seen by the spectators. Consider the biggest costs for an...

Trash Talking the Old America’s Cup is Getting Boring.

Posted by on Jul 12, 2011 in Americas Cup, USA, video | 3 comments

Multihulls are great for the America’s Cup. We get it. Sport changes and sports where technology is a driver become almost unrecognisable from one era to another. The new America’s Cup has the potential to be exciting, and spectators will come to see a new kind of sailing, however it is sad to see the ambassadors of the sport, denegrate the tradition that made the America’s Cup what it is. It’s great to see Jimmy Spithill on ‘everyman’ sports shows like Chronicle Live, but the current PR spin that...

Posted by on Jul 11, 2011 in Business, Open 60, United Kingdom, Vendee Globe, video | 1 comment

Last week, we were off taking a look at sailing from the other side of the Atlantic. As well as catching up with a few of our fans in Boston at the Extreme Sailing Series, we also talked to some of the top sports marketing people in the US about sailing and its place in 2011. More of that later, but in the mean time, there are a couple of stories that we need to catch up on. Some positive news for the IMOCA 60 Class and the Vendee Globe with the announcement that UK sailor Mike Golding has secured sponsorship from wind energy technology...

Laird Hamilton And Puma Ocean Racing Search for Monster Waves

Posted by on Jun 29, 2011 in Business, USA, Volvo 70 | Comments Off

Puma Ocean Racing has announced a partnership with the ultimate waterman – Laird Hamilton. Given the Volvo Ocean Race strapline of ‘Life at the Extreme’, it’s hard to think of a better brand ambassador for the new Puma boat, Mar Mostro. Hamilton is no stranger to sailing. He was one of the innovators of windsurfing and back in the day when windsurfing videos were sold on VHS to fans who couldn’t get enough of their sport on TV, footage of Laird sailing, and jumping a speedboard in the Neil Pryde video...

Round the Island Race Shows Heritage Can Grow Sailing Audiences.

Posted by on Jun 28, 2011 in Business, Round the Island Race, United Kingdom, video | Comments Off

How do you make your sailing event touch the widest group of people possible? One way is to make as many spectators as possible engage through social media like Twitter or Facebook. The other way is to engage as many participants as you can. Of course, the more participants you have, the more engagement on social media you have… The entry list for the 2011 J P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race featured 1908 boats. Assuming an average of 6 people per boat, that’s about 11,000 stories. Some of those stories feature the...
